Charlotte, get ready to cook up some joy. Discovery Place Science in Uptown has just opened Julia Child: A Recipe for Life, a warm and deliciously fun traveling exhibition celebrating the chef who taught America to love French cooking — and to laugh while learning.
Inside, visitors can step into a recreation of The French Chef television studio and see cooking TV history from Julia’s point of view, hear her own words about the first meal in France that changed her life, and leave a note for her at the Dear Julia station. You can even recreate the famous Valentine’s Day photograph Julia shared with her husband Paul, whose love and partnership shaped her remarkable journey from Paris classrooms to the beloved 1961 cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and a television career that began in 1963.
It is a joyful story of curiosity, persistence and butter: a woman who started over, practiced, tasted and tested, and then empowered millions of home cooks to do the same. Discovery Place Science, a nonprofit museum at 301 N. Tryon Street, is a perfect home for that spirit of hands-on learning.
The exhibition is on view now through January 17, 2027. Bring a friend, a date or your favorite fellow foodie — and, in Julia’s spirit, bon appétit!
