Every city has one place that feels like its backyard, and in Austin that place is filled with spring water. Barton Springs Pool, inside Zilker Park at 2131 William Barton Drive, is a three-acre swimming pool fed by underground springs that keep the water at a refreshing 68 to 70 degrees all year long — cool on the hottest Texas afternoon and surprisingly gentle in winter.
The scene is pure Austin. Grassy hillsides slope down to the water, perfect for spreading a towel, reading under the pecan trees or watching lap swimmers glide past. The pool’s rocky bottom and natural setting make it feel less like a city facility and more like a beloved swimming hole that a city grew up around — which is exactly what happened, since people have swum here for generations and the springs hold a special place in local life and legend.
Barton Springs is also a home worth protecting: the springs support rare wildlife, including the Barton Springs salamander, and the city cares for the pool with regular cleanings that keep the water clear and inviting. Visitors will find lifeguards in season, a bathhouse, and Zilker Park’s lawns, trails and playgrounds right outside the fence for a full day outdoors.
Happy City News tip: arrive early on a sunny morning, take a bracing first dip before the hillsides fill up, then warm up on the grass with coffee and breakfast tacos. It is the most Austin way imaginable to start a day.
