The Lyric: Baltimore’s 1894 Opera House Still Takes a Bow

Some rooms are born for applause. The Lyric, opened in 1894 on Mount Royal Avenue, has hosted more than 130 years of Baltimore nights out — opera eras, symphonic seasons, rock legends and comedy stars have all played under its proscenium.

Modeled on Leipzig’s great concert hall tradition and long known as the Lyric Opera House, the 2,500-seat venue today presents a packed calendar of concerts, stand-up, dance and special events, its red-and-gold interior as much a headliner as anyone on stage. The Modell Performing Arts Center era added modern polish while keeping the old soul intact.

From classical stages to arena comics, Baltimore’s big evenings still begin on Mount Royal.

The Lyric is at 140 West Mount Royal Avenue. Calendar at lyricbaltimore.com.
