Miracle on 34th Street: Hampden’s Legendary Block of Lights

One block in Hampden out-Christmases them all. The Miracle on 34th Street — the 700 block of West 34th Street, where neighbors have covered their rowhouses in a glorious, ever-growing blaze of lights, inflatables, trains and Baltimore icons (Natty Boh angels, hubcap trees) for more than 75 years — returns for the holiday season from late November through New Year’s Day.

It’s entirely grassroots and entirely free: families stroll the glowing block, residents hand out candy canes, and the whole city seems to pass through in pajamas at least once a season. Go early in the evening on a weekday for elbow room; go on a weekend for the full carnival energy.

The lights are at 700 West 34th Street in Hampden. Park a few blocks away, walk in, and respect the neighbors who make the miracle — donations to local charities are collected on the block.
