A Family Day at the National Aquarium: Sharks, Rainforests and Dolphins

Baltimore’s National Aquarium is engineered for family awe. Start at Blacktip Reef, where sharks, rays and a rescued sea turtle named Calypso glide through a coral lagoon visible from above and below; then ride the escalator into the Upland Tropical Rain Forest, where sloths lounge and scarlet ibis flash through the canopy as mist rolls in.

For little kids, the day has perfect pacing: the Living Seashore touch pools (horseshoe crabs, moon jellies), the 4-D immersion films for a sit-down breather, and the dolphin presentations at Dolphin Discovery, where the aquarium’s Atlantic bottlenose dolphins show off natural behaviors with their trainers. Stroller-friendly ramps wind the whole way — the building is a spiral, so you never backtrack.

The National Aquarium is at 501 East Pratt Street on the Inner Harbor. Timed-entry tickets at aqua.org; the first entry of the day is the calmest water.
