The National Aquarium: Baltimore’s Blue Heart on the Harbor

Since 1981, the National Aquarium has been Baltimore’s blue heart — a harborfront landmark of glass pyramids and glowing tanks that welcomes some 1.2 million visitors a year into the underwater world. Inside: nearly 20,000 animals, from the sharks circling Blacktip Reef to the rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins of Dolphin Discovery.

The journey flows through biomes: an Atlantic coral reef descending in a spiral ramp, the rainforest canopy of the Upland Tropical Rain Forest (free-flying birds, golden lion tamarins, two-toed sloths), the multi-story Australia: Wild Extremes river gorge, and the touch pools of Living Seashore. The aquarium’s conservation work — rescuing cold-stunned sea turtles, restoring Maryland wetlands — extends far beyond its walls.

The National Aquarium is at 501 East Pratt Street on Pier 3 of the Inner Harbor. Timed tickets at aqua.org — mornings are calmest.
