Maryland Wilderness: A Children’s Journey Through the State’s Wild Side

The best children’s zoo areas don’t just show animals — they put kids inside the story. Maryland Wilderness at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore sends young explorers through the state’s own habitats: across a lily-pad pond like a frog, into a giant hollow tree with a slide, past the bog turtles and hellbenders of Maryland’s streams, and nose-to-nose with the zoo’s ambassador animals.

Along the way, kids meet the neighbors they’d never spot on their own — river otters at play, bobcats in the woodland, red wolves and the cave creatures of the state’s underground. It’s Maryland science disguised as an adventure playground, designed at kid scale with grown-up learning woven in.

Maryland Wilderness is included with zoo admission at 1 Safari Place in Druid Hill Park. Details at marylandzoo.org — bring socks for the tree slide and time for a second lap.
