Lexington Market: Baltimore’s Historic Food Hall Since 1782

Some food halls are trendy. Lexington Market is history you can taste. Founded in 1782 — one of the longest continuously operating public markets in America — this Baltimore institution just got a spectacular new chapter: a $45 million redevelopment with a brand-new 60,000-square-foot market building and public plaza that reopened in January 2023.

Today the market hums with more than 40 businesses serving everything from legendary Faidley’s crab cakes to empanadas, fried chicken and small-batch ice cream. Notably, more than 50% of merchants are Black-owned and more than 50% are women-owned — a vendor mix that tastes like the real Baltimore.

What to expect

  • A Baltimore rite of passage — crab cakes, pit beef and half-and-half (half lemonade, half iced tea) are local canon.
  • Global flavors — Latin, Asian and soul-food stalls sit side by side.
  • Bright, modern space — the new building keeps the soul of the old market sheds with room to breathe.
  • Events and public art — the plaza hosts community programming all year.

The market is also one of downtown’s best lunch bets: arrive before noon for the shortest lines and the freshest picks of the day. Pair your visit with a stroll through the surrounding theater district or a ride on the nearby light rail. Whether it is your first crab cake or your five-hundredth, the market delivers the authentic, unpretentious Baltimore that locals love and visitors remember.
