Austin Opera: Big Voices Under the Long Center Lights

Grand passions need a grand room, and Austin Opera found one overlooking the lake. Founded in 1986 as Austin Lyric Opera, the company stages the world’s most sweeping love stories at the Long Center, where the glass lobby glows like a lantern before every performance.

The seasons mix the crown jewels, Tosca, Carmen, La bohĆØme, with new American works and fresh productions that invite first-timers in gently. Surtitles, pre-show talks and community events across the city keep the art form friendly, and the company’s young singers fill Austin schools with music between productions.

Austin Opera has grown with its city, from a scrappy lyric company into a cultural anchor whose opening nights feel like civic celebrations. When the soprano’s last note hangs over the hall and the audience exhales as one, you remember why opera has survived four centuries.

Happy City News dresses up for it gladly. In Austin, even the high notes have a hometown accent.
