ZACH Theatre: Texas’s Longest-Running Stage Tells Austin’s Stories

Austin has been telling itself stories at ZACH Theatre since 1932, which makes it the longest continuously running theatre company in Texas, and one of the happiest habits this city owns.

ZACH’s South Lamar campus is a small theatre village: the gleaming Topfer Theatre, the intimate Whisenhunt and Kleberg stages, and a performing arts school where Austin kids take their first bows. The seasons swing from Broadway musicals to world premieres, and its A Christmas Carol, retold with Austin soul and rock-and-roll joy, sells out the holidays year after year.

The company champions new plays and Texas voices, casts its own neighbors and fills its lobby with the feeling of a family reunion that happens to have a stage. Pre-show picnics on the plaza are a Zilker Park tradition in themselves.

Ninety-plus years young and still raising the curtain, ZACH is where Austin watches itself grow up. Happy City News has season tickets in its heart.
