On the UT Austin campus stands one of the biggest stages in American university life. Bass Concert Hall — flagship of Texas Performing Arts — seats nearly 3,000 and hosts the city’s Broadway tour series, where Hamilton and Wicked play to packed student-and-citizen houses, alongside global dance companies, orchestras and comedy and music legends.
TPA’s stages (Bates Recital Hall, McCullough and Payne theatres among them) form the teaching heart of UT’s College of Fine Arts while serving the whole city — an unusual double life of conservatory rigor and civic blockbuster. Student tickets keep the hall deliciously young; the programming keeps it worldly.
Between Bass Hall’s tours and the Butler School’s own concerts, the UT campus might be Austin’s hardest-working arts district after downtown itself.
