Pedernales Falls State Park: Austin’s Limestone Staircase on the River

Just 30 miles west of Austin, the Pedernales River does something unforgettable: it spills over giant slabs of layered limestone in a broad, natural staircase, pooling in emerald channels before tumbling on through the Hill Country. Pedernales Falls State Park protects that spectacle, and the cooler, golden days of late October may be the finest time all year to go and stand above it.

Start with the easy half-mile Twin Falls Nature Trail, which leads to a scenic overlook gazing straight down the falls. Ready for more? The six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail wraps around Tobacco and Wolf mountains through small, shady canyons, while mountain bikers take on the 10-mile Juniper Ridge Trail. Between hikes, the park’s bird blind and butterfly garden reward anyone willing to slow down and watch.

Downstream, a designated swimming area invites visitors to swim, wade, tube and fish, and campsites with water and electricity – plus walk-in primitive sites – make it easy to stay for a Hill Country sunset. Reserve a day pass ahead through Texas Parks and Wildlife, check river conditions before you go, and swim only in the designated area, never at the falls themselves. Austin’s wild front porch is waiting, half an hour from downtown.
