Texas Book Festival Turns the Capitol Grounds Into an Open-Air Library November 7-8

Austin is getting ready to turn the Texas State Capitol grounds into an open-air library. The 2026 Texas Book Festival takes over downtown on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, bringing more than 250 authors, 20,000 books in its annual book sale, a full day of cooking demonstrations, book signings all weekend, and dedicated programming for children and young adults.

The literary celebration is designed for every kind of reader. Book lovers can move from author talks and panel conversations to signings where they can meet writers in person, while families can settle into children’s activities and young-adult sessions built to spark a love of reading early. Food fans get their own flavor of the festival with live cooking demonstrations that bring cookbooks to life on stage.

One of the happiest traditions returns this year: the First Book Free Book program gives free books to Title I students, putting new stories directly into the hands of young readers who may be building their very first home library. With 20,000 books on sale and programming spread across the Capitol grounds, the weekend is built for wandering – arrive with a tote bag and a list, and leave with a stack of signed finds.

Happy City News will be watching for schedule highlights as the weekend approaches. For Austin readers, this is one of the brightest dates on the fall calendar: two free-spirited days where the whole city seems to be talking about books at once.
