Austin is invited to see Texas history through a luminous new lens. Happy City News is pleased to share that the Bullock Texas State History Museum will host Texas Focus: Black History With Barbara Smith Conrad on Saturday, October 24, 2026, a special program in its Texas Focus series celebrating the stories of Black Texans.
The program spotlights the extraordinary life of Barbara Smith Conrad (1937ā2017), the gifted mezzo-soprano from Center Point whose talent carried her onto international stages. Conrad’s student years at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1950s became a defining chapter in the push to desegregate the campus, and her later career ā crowned by an invitation to sing at the White House ā stands as a testament to perseverance and grace. Photographs from the 1960s desegregation era will help bring that history vividly to life.
Guests can also view the celebrated Juneteenth Quilt, a richly layered work that weaves the meaning of Juneteenth ā the June 19, 1865 announcement in Galveston that brought freedom to enslaved Texans ā into color and cloth. Together, the photographs and the quilt offer a moving afternoon of art, music history and community memory.
The Bullock Museum is at 1800 Congress Avenue in downtown Austin. The Texas Focus series, presented by the museum’s education team, brings fresh perspectives to the ongoing Story of Texas ā and this installment promises to be one of its most inspiring yet.
