Haas Brothers Bring Their Fantastical ‘Uncanny Valley’ Home to Austin at the Blanton

Austin is getting a joyful homecoming at the Blanton Museum of Art. Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley, on view from September 27, 2026 through January 17, 2027, is the first mid-career survey of twin brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas, artists who grew up in Austin and say the city helped shape their wonderfully weird imagination.

The exhibition brings together selections from 15 years of work that moves happily between art, design and technology. Visitors will meet colorful, biomorphic sculptures that look like creatures and plants from another world, intricately made in porcelain, bronze, wool, glass beads, fur and blown glass. Look out for the towering Strawberry Tree and playful porcelain figures that turn a gallery visit into a treasure hunt for the imagination.

The brothers have said they draw inspiration from the Austin they encountered as children, from public art and the signage of local businesses to landmarks like the Treaty Oak and the moontowers. That makes this national tour stop feel personal: the city that encouraged them to keep it weird now gets to wander through the worlds they built.

Organized by Cranbrook Art Museum and curated by Laura Mott, the show is included with museum admission and free for Blanton members. Families can also join the Halloween-themed Blanton All Day: A Very Haas Halloween on Sunday, October 18, with music, art talks and creative activities, plus public tours of the exhibition on November 1. It is a bright, surprising and very Austin way to spend a fall day.
