Washington, DC starts November with a free celebration made for families. On Saturday, November 7, the National Gallery of Art’s East Building comes alive for its First Saturday Festival, a joyful morning and afternoon of artmaking, stories, movement and play built around one uplifting theme: finding gratitude through art.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., children can settle into the Kids’ Play Space in the Ground Level Atrium, join drop-in artmaking sessions and get their faces painted at the Cascade CafĆ© on the Concourse. At 10 a.m., storytime shares My Heart Fills with Happiness / Mi corazón se llena de alegrĆa, a bilingual reading that fits the gratitude theme perfectly. Little visitors can also stretch and breathe at children’s yoga sessions at 10:30 and 11 a.m. in the Library Atrium.
The First Saturday Festivals run on the first Saturday of each month, and every edition brings a new reason to visit. October celebrated American art, November turns to gratitude, and December will get ready for the holidays. All activities are free, and most are first come, first served, so arriving early is a happy strategy for families in Washington.
Happy City News loves mornings like this: a great museum on the National Mall opening its doors wide, with creativity at every corner and not a ticket in sight. Bring the kids, bring your gratitude list, and make something beautiful together.
