A beloved piece of Washington history is opening its doors wide. The National Park Service and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) invite everyone to the grand re-opening of the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 9 am to 5 pm ā and the whole day is free and open to the public.
The Shaw rowhouse at 1538 Ninth Street NW was Woodson’s “office-home” from 1922 until 1950, the very place where the scholar known as the Father of Black History launched Negro History Week ā the seed of today’s Black History Month. Visitors will get to experience the new Visitor Center and exhibits, take guided tours of the historic house, join Woodson Walking Tours through the Shaw neighborhood, and even “meet” Dr. Woodson himself. Hands-on children’s programs and live music round out the celebration.
All tours and programming begin at the historic Shiloh Baptist Church at 1500 Ninth Street NW. Free tour tickets will be handed out first-come, first-served from 9 am to 4 pm at the NPS Welcome Tent, with multiple tours departing each hour through both the new visitor center and Woodson’s home. More details are available at nps.gov/cawo.
