South Tampa’s oldest waterfront gathering place sits where the city meets the open bay: Ballast Point Park, a shady, oak-hung park ending in a 970-foot pier that walks you out over Hillsborough Bay toward the downtown skyline.
Families fish from the pier (bait shop and café on site), picnic under the oaks where Tampa picnicked in the 1890s, launch boats and let the kids claim the playground and splash pad. The view — the whole downtown skyline across the water — is the one on a thousand Tampa postcards.
Sunrise here is a local sacrament; sunset turns the pier into the city’s quietest theater.
Ballast Point isn’t Tampa’s newest park. It’s something better: its most loved.
