Exquisite Creatures: 10,000 Real Specimens Turned Into Art on the Seattle Waterfront

Seattle’s waterfront just got a whole lot more wonderful. Exquisite Creatures, the immersive exhibit by acclaimed artist and naturalist Christopher Marley, is now open at the historic Maritime Building at 900 Alaskan Way, inviting visitors on a dazzling journey through nature as art.

Forget everything you think a natural history display looks like. Marley arranges more than 10,000 real specimens – shimmering beetles, iridescent fish, delicate butterflies, minerals and fossils, all ethically sourced – into breathtaking three-dimensional mosaics and geometric compositions. With over 500 works of art, the exhibition turns biodiversity into pure visual wonder: nature arranged as art rather than catalogued as science.

The experience takes about an hour to an hour and a half, and timed entry keeps the galleries comfortable and uncrowded. Kids love it – children from age 4 are welcome, and the whole space is wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly. It is open daily except Wednesdays (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days, until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday), and it runs through March 2027.

With a perfect 5.0 rating from hundreds of reviewers, visitors call it “magical” and “awestruck.” Book your tickets for Exquisite Creatures here and prepare to see the natural world in a whole new light.
