Mission Bay Park: San Diego’s Giant Aquatic Playground

At 4,600 acres, Mission Bay Park is the largest aquatic park of its kind in the United States — a sparkling man-made bay ringed by 27 miles of shoreline, sandy beaches, grassy picnic areas and calm, swimmer-friendly water.

This is San Diego’s playground: sailboats and paddleboards dot the bay, the Mission Beach boardwalk buzzes with skaters and cyclists, and families claim fire rings and picnic tables at spots like Ski Beach and Crown Point. Bonita Cove and Ventura Cove offer protected swimming perfect for little ones.

It is ideal for active families, water-sports beginners and big groups: you can rent kayaks, sailboats and bikes right at the bay. Practical tip: parking lots are free but busy on weekends — arrive before 10 a.m. for the best picnic spots, and bring layers for the bay breeze at sunset.
