San Antonio Zoo Opens State-of-the-Art Brewer Ocean Conservation Lab on World Reef Awareness Day

Great news for animal lovers and ocean dreamers! On World Reef Awareness Day (June 1), San Antonio Zoo officially opened the Brewer Ocean Conservation Lab, a brand-new, state-of-the-art conservation and education facility dedicated to coral restoration, research, and ocean conservation.

Guests joined zoo leaders, the Brewer family, and city council members for a festive ribbon-cutting celebration marking this major milestone. Made possible through a generous gift from the Brewer family in honor of the late R.P. Brewer III, the lab partners with NOAA and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) program to cultivate corals that will help restore threatened reefs.

The first facility of its kind at the zoo, the lab features deep-water Texas and international coral species, interactive educational experiences, and hands-on programming designed to inspire future conservationists. It is not just an exhibit: it is a working research and restoration lab where real coral propagation happens every day.

Although San Antonio sits hundreds of miles from the coast, families can now experience the “rainforest of the seas” up close and learn why coral reefs — home to about 25 percent of all marine life — need our protection. A perfect happy-news plan for the whole family!
