Briscoe Museum Honors the Women Who Shaped Texas and Mexico in New Kathy Sosa Exhibition

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is getting ready to celebrate history through a powerful new lens. On October 15, the museum opens “Kathy Sosa: Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico,” an exhibition that shines a spotlight on the women who helped shape the cultural landscape connecting Texas, Mexico and the American West.

Featuring more than 30 works by San Antonio artist Kathy Sosa, the exhibition includes paintings, mixed media pieces and sculpture inspired by the artist’s celebrated book of portraits of soldaderas, saints and subversives. Sosa’s work explores mestizaje — the beautiful blending of peoples, languages, foods, music and traditions that defines borderlands culture.

The exhibition also marks the reopening of the Briscoe’s refreshed Women of the West Gallery, expanding the stories of the women who built and shaped the West. It will be on view through June 14, 2027, and pairs beautifully with the museum’s landmark exhibition “Tejano Legacy: Another American Origin Story” and “Selena Forever | Siempre Selena,” both on view this fall.

And the fun doesn’t stop at the galleries! The Briscoe’s fall lineup includes a free live concert by Llamativa, San Antonio’s all-female cumbia group, on October 22, plus free film screenings, a Tejano culture panel and more. Located on the River Walk near La Villita, the Briscoe is a perfect stop for families, art lovers and anyone curious about the vibrant history of Texas.
