All Aboard: A Family Transit Adventure in Portland

Here is a happy Portland secret: the city itself is the ride. TriMet’s MAX light rail trains and the Portland Streetcar turn an ordinary family day into a rolling scavenger hunt, and kids six and under ride free with a fare-paying adult.

Start downtown at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland’s living room, and hop the MAX Blue or Red Line toward the river. Give the kids a mission: count the bridges. Portland’s Willamette crossings are the game’s levels, from the futuristic, car-free Tilikum Crossing to the double-decker Steel Bridge, where trains glide on the lower deck while cars pass above.

Switch to the Portland Streetcar for a slow, window-seat loop through downtown and the Pearl District, passing Powell’s City of Books and the museum blocks. Then comes the grand finale: ride the MAX west to the Washington Park station, the deepest transit station in North America, 260 feet underground, and ride the elevator up straight into the trees, steps from the Oregon Zoo and the World Forestry Center.

A day pass keeps the whole adventure simple, the trains are stroller-friendly, and every stop is a new neighborhood to explore. In Portland, getting there really is half the fun, and Happy City News families keep telling us the train day is the day the kids ask to repeat.
