Portland Chinatown Museum: The Story of Oregon’s First Chinatown

Portland’s Chinatown was once the second largest in America, and the Portland Chinatown Museum — housed in the historic 1910 Tung Sang Building in Old Town — finally gives that community the museum it deserves.

Its signature exhibition follows Chinese Oregonians from Gold Rush arrivals through the exclusion era’s injustices to the restaurateurs, doctors and artists who shaped modern Portland. A recreated herb shop, family photographs and community voices make the history intimate and alive.

The museum also fuels today’s culture with art exhibitions, Lunar New Year celebrations and lion dances in the neighborhood it documents. Compact, powerful and long overdue — a vital Portland story, lovingly told.
