Jamison Square and Portland’s Dancing Fountains: Summer’s Splash Headquarters

When summer heat finds Portland, Portland finds its fountains. The city’s interactive water features are legendary family territory — free, central and designed for splashing. Jamison Square in the Pearl District is the crown jewel: a cascading stone fountain that pours into a shallow basin where toddlers have ruled since 2000.

Downtown, the Salmon Street Springs at Waterfront Park shoots choreographed jets for running, dodging kids, while Teachers Fountain at Director Park adds elegant arcs in the city’s living room. Ira Keller Fountain’s dramatic waterfalls, across from the Keller Auditorium, double as an urban swimming hole on the hottest days.

Pack a towel and a change of clothes, claim a café table nearby, and let the kids get gloriously soaked. It’s Portland’s happiest air conditioning — and it costs nothing.
