Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden: Portland’s Blooming Hidden Gem

Ask a Portlander for their favorite garden and half will whisper this one. Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, tucked beside Reed College in Southeast Portland, winds 9.5 acres of paths around spring-fed lakes, small waterfalls and more than 2,500 rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias.

From February’s first shy blooms to the May crescendo — when the hillsides ignite in pink, crimson, lavender and white — the garden is a painter’s palette you can walk through. Wood ducks paddle the mirror-still lake, bridges arc over inlets, and benches appear exactly where you want to sit down and sigh.

The Mother’s Day weekend Rhododendron Show fills the exhibition hall with prize trusses, but the garden’s everyday state — misty, green and nearly silent — is its own reward. Admission is a bargain, and free days pop up through the season.

It’s the Portland of the locals: unhurried, lush and quietly spectacular. Bring a camera and someone who appreciates a good bloom.
