Oregon Rail Heritage Center: Where Portland’s Steam Giants Live

Two of America’s most famous steam locomotives live in Portland, and you can stand close enough to feel their heat. The Oregon Rail Heritage Center, across from OMSI in the Central Eastside, is the roundhouse for the streamlined Southern Pacific 4449 — star of America’s 1976 Bicentennial Freedom Train — and the mighty Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700.

Volunteers who restore and run these giants lead tours through the engine house, where a third locomotive, Oregon Railroad & Navigation 197, is rising bolt by bolt. Holiday Express trains each December let families ride behind the 4449 in a blaze of steam and lights — a Portland tradition that sells out fast.

Free admission (donations encouraged), a turntable out front, and the thunder of living history: this is rail heritage with its sleeves rolled up.
