The 59th Carnegie International Brings World Contemporary Art to Pittsburgh Through January 3

Pittsburgh is once again the center of the global art world. The 59th Carnegie International — the longest-running exhibition of international art in North America, organized every four years since 1896 — is now on view at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and runs through January 3, 2027.

This year’s edition, titled If the word we, explores what connection means in a time of increasing isolation. Curated by Ryan Inouye, Danielle A. Jackson, and Liz Park, the exhibition brings together new commissions, existing works, and site-specific installations by dozens of artists from around the world — spanning painting, sculpture, dance performance, immersive installations, and experimental sound.

Why this edition matters

  • A Pittsburgh tradition since 1896: The Carnegie International has introduced groundbreaking artists and movements for more than 130 years — it is among the most prestigious recurring art exhibitions in the world.
  • New commissions and premieres: Artists debut brand-new works created for Pittsburgh, including planetarium animations, sound installations, and large-scale collaborative projects.
  • Art across disciplines: Beyond galleries, the International includes live dance, film, and performance programming that turns the museum into a living stage.
  • Time to plan your visit: With the exhibition open through early January 2027, fall and the holiday season are ideal moments to experience it at your own pace.
