“Wisdom from the Future”: 28 Renowned Indigenous Artists Share Letters to Their Younger Selves at the Heard

The Heard Museum is hosting a moving conversation across time. “Wisdom from the Future,” on view in the Lovena Ohl Gallery through January 3, 2027, brings together 28 of the most renowned Native artists — including Tony Abeyta, Kay WalkingStick, Virgil Ortiz, Preston Singletary, Nora Naranjo Morse, and Denise Wallace — each pairing artwork with personal reflections written as letters to their younger selves.

The letters are intimate and inspiring. Juanita Growing Thunder Fogarty writes: “Stay true to yourself, and carry yourself with humility, integrity, and grace.” Denise Wallace reflects that her early works still fill her with pride and admiration. Together, the letters and artworks reveal stories of inspiration, challenge, and growth — a bridge between generations of Indigenous creativity.

The exhibition is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (closed Mondays June through August) and is included with museum admission. As an extra hook, the Heard will host a Curator Talk on the exhibition on October 15, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to noon — also included with admission.

This is the Heard doing what it does best: celebrating Indigenous art not just as beautiful objects, but as living voices full of wisdom, resilience, and hope for the future — a cultural gift that Phoenix is proud to share with the world.
