Philadelphia families get a joyful mix of Halloween and hands-on science this Saturday, October 24, when The Franklin Institute hosts Spooktacular Science Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration is free with general admission and is designed for families, kids and Halloween fans of all ages.
The museum fills with themed trick-or-treat doors, where young visitors can meet friendly witches, mummies and other festive characters while collecting sweet treats — just bring your own bag. Costumes are encouraged, and everyone is invited to join a cheerful costume parade down the Atrium ramp.
Live science takes center stage all day. Families can catch That’s Gross!, a playful look at the surprising science of the human body, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; How NOT to Carve a Pumpkin, a messy demonstration of the chemistry and physics behind a Halloween experiment, at 1 p.m.; and The Electricity Show, full of lightning and glowing surprises, at noon and 3 p.m.
Curious minds can also watch a squid dissection to discover the real science behind legendary sea monsters, try a slime drop experiment, and enjoy hands-on play with Shrinky Dinks, Pepper’s Ghost illusions and Jacob’s Ladder demonstrations. It is a bright, welcoming way to celebrate the season while learning together in the heart of Philadelphia.
