Mathematics and the Art of M.C. Escher Opens at MoMath in New York

New York has a joyful new reason to look at art and mathematics together. The National Museum of Mathematics, known as MoMath, is presenting Mathematics and the Art of M.C. Escher, on view from October 1, 2026, through February 8, 2027, in its Composite gallery at 635 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.

The museum describes it as the first major M.C. Escher exhibition in Manhattan and the first devoted to revealing the mathematics behind his extraordinary work. More than 60 prints, drawings, original woodblocks and other objects invite visitors into Escher’s impossible architecture, tessellations and visual paradoxes.

Instead of treating those famous images only as puzzles, the exhibition illuminates the elegant structures underneath them: symmetry, geometry, infinity, perspective and spatial logic. What begins as delight at a staircase that loops forever or birds that turn into fish becomes a hands-on lesson in how patterns repeat, transform and surprise.

Admission to the exhibition is included with general museum admission, and MoMath is accompanying it with The Many Worlds of M.C. Escher, a series of in-person presentations offering new ways to look at his ideas and imagination. It is a perfect Happy City News pick for curious families, students, teachers and art lovers alike, in the heart of New York.
