Grab a helmet and hit the track! The Brooklyn Children’s Museum in Crown Heights opens its newest exhibit, Riders Ready: The Science of BMX, on Saturday, October 24, and families are invited to celebrate opening day at the museum at 145 Brooklyn Avenue.
The hands-on exhibit explores the excitement and the science behind BMX. Through interactive activities, young visitors will learn how bike setup and track design shape a ride, how helmets work to keep riders safe, and the principles of speed, energy, balance and friction that keep two wheels rolling. It is a joyful way for kids to see physics in action ā by touching, testing and playing, rather than just reading about it.
Opening day is packed with family fun on the museum’s rooftop. A ribbon cutting at 11:00 a.m. kicks off the celebration, followed by BMX demonstrations by Matty Cranmer and Chad Douglas at 11:20 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. All day, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., children can decorate a helmet, enjoy bike-themed coloring, temporary tattoos, stickers and instant photo portraits. Author Dan Saks leads an On Our Bikes storytime and singalong, and bike raffles at 12:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. give lucky riders a chance to win a bike.
The exhibit and all opening day activities are included with general admission, making this a perfect weekend plan for New York families with curious, energetic kids.
