Some of the happiest miles in New Orleans are not driven at all — they are walked, jogged and pedaled along the Lafitte Greenway, the 2.6-mile linear park that turned a historic transportation corridor into the city’s green backyard.
Opened in 2015 along the old Lafitte Corridor, the paved trail links Mid-City with the edge of the French Quarter, passing ball fields, playgrounds, community gardens, public art and wide lawns shaded by young trees. Neighbors use it for morning runs and evening strolls, kids learn to ride bikes away from traffic, and the whole route stays free and open to everyone, every day.
The Greenway also tells a story: the corridor once carried a canal and later a railroad, and today its bridges, markers and gathering spaces celebrate the neighborhoods it crosses. Farmers markets, fitness classes and community events keep it lively in every season.
Whether you walk a single block or ride the full trail end to end, the Lafitte Greenway is one of the easiest — and greenest — ways to fall in love with New Orleans all over again.
