Hennepin Avenue glitters again. Hennepin Arts (formerly Hennepin Theatre Trust) stewards three restored jewels of Minneapolis’s historic theatre district: the opulent Orpheum (1921), the Renaissance-Revival State (1921) and the Art Deco-inflected Pantages (1916) — together hosting Broadway’s biggest tours, comedy giants and legendary concerts.
The rescue story is pure Minneapolis: citizens fought demolition in the 1980s and 90s, restored the houses jewel by jewel, and built a nonprofit that now drives the whole avenue’s cultural economy. The Orpheum’s chandeliered lobby and the State’s 2,100 seats have welcomed everything from The Lion King to hometown heroes.
On show nights, Hennepin’s marquees light up in sequence like a runway — downtown’s most glamorous stroll.
