Minnesota is home to the largest Somali community in North America — and, remarkably, to the world’s only museum of Somali traditional art. The Somali Museum of Minnesota, founded in 2013, preserves a heritage that decades of conflict put at risk, with more than 1,000 artifacts: woven milk vessels, carved doors, textiles, jewelry and a full traditional nomadic dwelling.
The museum is as much a living room as a gallery: elders teach weaving, dancers rehearse for the annual Somali Week celebrations, and school groups learn how a camel-herding culture crossed an ocean and put down roots in the snow. Rotating exhibitions pair historic pieces with contemporary Somali artists.
It’s a museum that exists nowhere else on Earth, born from one community’s determination to remember. A Minneapolis treasure, full stop.
