Perched above the Sculpture Garden in a crystalline tower by Herzog & de Meuron, the Walker Art Center is where Minneapolis goes to see art’s future. Since 1940 it has championed the contemporary — the museum that brought Duchamp, Warhol and today’s boldest voices to the Midwest, often before anyone else.
Its multidisciplinary mission makes it more than a museum: world-premiere performances, the region’s deepest film program (including the beloved Walker Dialogue series), design exhibitions and the indie-spirited Rock the Garden music festival on the museum’s green hillside each summer.
Thursday nights are free and buzzing; the rooftop terraces frame the skyline; the gift shop is a design lover’s trap. The Walker doesn’t ask you to “get” contemporary art — it dares you to enjoy it.
