Minnesota Children’s Museum: Play Is the Whole Point

Downtown St. Paul hides a three-story palace of play. The Minnesota Children’s Museum is built on a radical, research-backed idea: kids learn best by playing their hearts out. Its centerpiece, The Scramble, is a four-story climbing tower of nets and slides that children conquer like tiny mountaineers.

Around it unfold worlds to inhabit: Our World, a kid-scale town with a post office, fire truck and grocery to run; the Creativity Jam for building and making; Forces at Play for water-and-air experiments; and a rooftop Art Park in summer. Traveling exhibits — from Wild Kratts to storybook lands — keep regulars returning.

For under-10s, this is the Twin Cities’ happiest homework: pure play, brilliantly disguised as a museum.
