Liberty Memorial Tower: The View That Watches Over Kansas City

Rising 217 feet above the city, the Liberty Memorial Tower is Kansas City’s most recognizable silhouette — and one of its most moving. The limestone tower crowns the National WWI Museum and Memorial, honoring the men and women who served in the Great War, and its observation deck offers one of the finest panoramic views of the downtown skyline.

Getting to the top is part of the adventure: a glass elevator and 45 steps lift you to an open-air deck where the city spreads out in every direction, from Union Station’s grand facade below to the glittering towers of downtown. On special after-hours evenings in October, visitors can even climb at sunset and watch the skyline light up.

The grounds themselves are worth the trip: sweeping lawns, the twin Assyrian sphinxes representing Memory and Future, and a peaceful setting that invites picnics and quiet reflection alike. It is Kansas City’s front porch and its memory keeper in one.

Whether you come for the history, the photograph or the simple joy of seeing the city from above, the Liberty Memorial Tower delivers a view with a story.
