Tucked inside Swope Park, the Lakeside Nature Center is where Kansas City kids meet their wild neighbors: rescued hawks, owls, snakes, turtles and other Missouri animals that can’t return to the wild, now serving as the region’s most charming teachers.
The center — one of Missouri’s largest wildlife rehabilitation hospitals — introduces families to native species through live exhibits, nature trails along the Little Blue River and free programs from story times to guided hikes. Peeking at recovering patients through the hospital windows is a quiet thrill.
Admission is free, the trails are shady, and the park around it — the zoo, Starlight Theatre, acres of green — makes Lakeside an easy anchor for a full Swope Park day.
It’s the wild side of Kansas City, at a pace even a toddler can keep.
