Families can add a splash of color — and a lovely lesson in tradition — to the season at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where the popular Sugar Skulls drop-in workshop returns to the museum’s art-making studio. The hands-on sessions run Friday, October 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 from noon to 4 p.m., and again Friday, October 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 from noon to 4 p.m.
While they decorate a sugar skull of their own to take home, children and grown-ups learn how these bright, lovingly adorned skulls are used in Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexican and Mexican American communities — as joyful tributes that honor and remember loved ones. It is art, storytelling and heritage all in one cheerful, make-and-take afternoon, and no experience is needed to join in.
The DIA describes its drop-in workshops as hands-on art-making for all ages, with projects that change weekly, which makes Sugar Skulls an easy add-on to a family museum day among the galleries. Capacity is limited, so arriving early is a smart move, especially on the weekend afternoons. Bring your imagination, pick your brightest colors, and leave with a one-of-a-kind keepsake — and a deeper appreciation for a beautiful tradition.
