Coming January 2027: ‘Velázquez & Olivares’ Brings Spanish Court Masterpieces to the DIA

Detroit’s art calendar for 2027 is already glittering. The Detroit Institute of Arts will present Velázquez & Olivares: Early Years at Court from January 24 to July 25, 2027, an exhibition devoted to the young Diego Velázquez and the powerful count-duke who launched his career at the court of Philip IV.

The show promises a rare look at the painter before the fame of Las Meninas — the kitchen scenes, portraits and religious works of a twenty-something genius learning to see light like no one before him. For the DIA, whose Spanish collection is a quiet strength, it is a headline exhibition in a season that also includes Caravaggio’s Models in the spring.

Mark the calendar now; major loan exhibitions at the DIA tend to draw crowds from across the Midwest. The museum is at 5200 Woodward Avenue, and member previews and ticket details will be posted at dia.org.
