A First for Texas: Bruce Nauman’s “Identical” Shines at the Nasher Sculpture Center

Big news for art lovers: the Nasher Sculpture Center in the heart of the Dallas Arts District is hosting the very first exhibition ever organized by a Texas museum for one of the most celebrated artists of our time — Bruce Nauman.

Bruce Nauman: Identical is on view from September 19, 2026 through March 21, 2027, and it brings together a wonderful group of recent sculptures and drawings that grew out of the artist’s own daily practice in his New Mexico studio.

The sculptures are full of character: polyurethane, silicone rubber and plaster-cast animal forms, assembled from foam taxidermy molds of coyotes and foxes — wild animals the artist knows well from the New Mexico ranchland he has called home since the 1980s. Wires join and suspend the abstracted creatures in playful, unexpected configurations, while scrap lumber, hammers and cardboard anchor the pieces to the floor. Hanging among them, the Nasher shows the very silicone molds used to produce the plaster counterparts — displayed here for the very first time.

The show also includes a selection of delicate silverpoint and goldpoint still-life drawings — the spark that set the whole project in motion when Nauman cleaned up a corner of his studio and started drawing what was on the wall.

With a career spanning more than six decades across video, film, sound, neon and performance, Nauman has inspired generations of artists. Now Dallas gets to experience his magic firsthand — a reason to celebrate for the whole city. Check nashersculpturecenter.org for tickets and plan your visit.
