The Schiele Museum: Natural History Adventures in Gastonia

Twenty-five minutes west of Charlotte, the Schiele Museum of Natural History has been the region’s cabinet of wonders since 1961. Its halls sweep from dinosaurs (a T. rex keeps watch) through North Carolina wildlife dioramas and a hall of Earth and space science, anchored by the James H. Lynn Planetarium’s dome shows.

Outside, the museum’s nature trail winds to a recreated Catawba Indian Village and a 18th-century farmstead, with live animal exhibits and a gem and mineral collection that sparkles for young geologists. The Schiele’s camps and scout programs are Gaston County institutions.

It’s the classic American natural history museum, perfectly sized for a family afternoon — big wonder, small fuss, and a dinosaur on the way home through Charlotte’s west side.
