Oars up, Boston! One of the world’s largest and most beloved rowing regattas is back on the Charles River: the Head Of The Charles Regatta takes over October 16–18, 2026, for three thrilling days of racing, riverside picnics, and peak fall foliage.
Thousands of rowers — from Olympic champions to college crews and masters athletes — will travel from across the globe to compete on the winding three-mile course between Boston and Cambridge. And the best part for spectators? Watching is completely free along the riverbanks, from the starting line near Boston University all the way to the finish.
The regatta is much more than a race: it’s a giant riverside festival. Grab a coffee and a spot on the grass, cheer as the shells glide under the historic bridges, stroll the vendor areas, and enjoy the autumn colors reflecting on the water. With events like the Boston Beach Sprints adding extra excitement, there’s something for everyone — even if you’ve never watched rowing before.
So mark your calendar, pack a blanket, and bring the whole family to the Charles. There’s nothing quite like a crisp October weekend in Boston with thousands of athletes, cheering crowds, and the most scenic racecourse in rowing.
