Family Day at Fort McHenry: Junior Rangers and the Big Flag

History lands differently when you’re nine and holding a flag corner. Family days at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine turn the birthplace of the national anthem into a hands-on adventure: kids earn Junior Ranger badges by completing the park’s activity booklet, help rangers raise and lower the giant 30-by-42-foot flag, and stand on the ramparts where Baltimore’s defenders watched the British fleet in 1814.

The visitor center film (with its famous final reveal of the fort itself) holds even wiggly attention, the barracks and guardhouse rooms are dressed as the garrison left them, and the sea wall path invites a breezy walk with ice cream from Locust Point afterward. Living-history weekends add fifes, drums and cannon demonstrations.

Fort McHenry is at 2400 East Fort Avenue. Program schedules and Junior Ranger details are at nps.gov/fomc.
