One floor, a dozen civilizations. The Walters Art Museum’s Across Asia: Arts of Asia and the Islamic World galleries gather one of the finest Asian collections in the American East — Chinese porcelain and Japanese armor, Indian painting and Tibetan Buddhist art, Islamic ceramics and metalwork of dazzling precision.
The galleries invite conversation across cultures: curators and community voices (including the museum’s Queering the Collection talk series) keep finding new stories in objects that have rested here for a century. Look for the monumental Thai Buddha, the jewel-box Japanese netsuke and the calligraphy that turns handwriting into painting.
Across Asia is part of the Walters’ permanent display at 600 North Charles Street in Mount Vernon, free to visit Wednesday through Sunday. Exhibition and program listings are at thewalters.org.
