Climb one modest hill and the whole city spreads out below you. Federal Hill Park, rising just south of the Inner Harbor, offers Baltimore’s signature postcard: the downtown skyline across the water, the harbor’s marinas and museum ships in the foreground, and sunset light doing the rest.
The hill earned its name in 1788, when thousands celebrated Maryland’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution here; later it guarded the harbor through the Civil War, and its cannons still point across the water as reminders. Today it’s the neighborhood’s front lawn — dog walkers at dawn, picnics at noon, photographers at golden hour and the whole city on the Fourth of July, when the fireworks burst right overhead.
Federal Hill Park is at 300 Warren Avenue, free and open daily. Pair the view with dinner in the Federal Hill neighborhood below — the Cross Street Market anchors its delicious main street.
