Austin families, clear a spot on the autumn calendar: the Woodland Faerie Trail returns to Zilker Botanical Garden this fall with a brand-new storybook theme. “Once Upon a Trail: A Woodland Faerie Trail Experience” opens Saturday, October 24, 2026, and runs through January 10, 2027, transforming the garden’s shady paths into an enchanted village of tiny faerie homes built by local artists, gardeners, architects and families.
The Woodland Faerie Trail is one of Austin’s most beloved homegrown traditions: a self-guided, quarter-mile stroll along the garden’s escarpment trail where more than 50 whimsical faerie doors, cottages and miniature scenes hide among the oaks, rocks and roots. This year’s “Once Upon a Trail” theme leans into classic fairy tales, so expect storybook touches at every turn ā the kind of details that reward kids for slowing down and looking closely.
What keeps Austinites coming back year after year is that this is a trail made by the community, for the community. Every faerie home is designed and built by a local creator, which means no two are alike. Ten minutes in, a hollow stump stops looking like garden dĆ©cor and starts looking like somebody’s front door ā carved, welcoming, and just small enough to make an adult feel pleasantly out of scale. It is gentle, screen-free magic, and it works on grown-ups just as reliably as it works on five-year-olds.
The experience is included with regular garden admission, and advance reservations are recommended through Zilker Botanical Garden’s website, especially on weekends. The trail winds through a wooded hillside, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, and the garden’s 31 acres ā koi ponds, rose gardens and the prehistoric Hartman garden ā make it easy to turn a faerie hunt into a full morning outdoors. It is included with regular garden admission.
