Hill Country Flyer: A Vintage Train Ride From Cedar Park to Burnet

All aboard for the slow way to Saturday. The Hill Country Flyer, run by the nonprofit Austin Steam Train Association since 1992, rolls vintage passenger cars out of Cedar Park and into the hills, giving families a whole day measured in whistles instead of traffic lights.

The star is the association’s mighty 1960 Alco diesel, lovingly maintained by volunteers, pulling mid-century coaches and lounge cars where kids press noses to the windows through ranch country, over trestles and past wildflowers each spring. Conductors in period dress collect tickets the old-fashioned way: with a punch and a story.

The run to Burnet includes a layover long enough for lunch, antique shops and the town square, and seasonal specials add fall harvest rides and the beloved North Pole Flyer each December, when pajama-clad young passengers hunt for Santa.

It boards twenty minutes from North Austin and delivers a century in an afternoon. Happy City News calls it the happiest history lesson on rails.
