Texas Book Festival Returns to Downtown Austin November 14–15, 2026

Book lovers, mark your calendars: the Texas Book Festival returns to downtown Austin on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15, 2026, completely free and open to all. It is one of the most beloved literary celebrations in the country — and it happens right in the heart of Austin.

Each year the festival welcomes more than 250 authors of the year’s best books and attracts around 45,000 attendees to the blocks surrounding the Texas State Capitol. Across two full days, visitors enjoy author panels, book signings, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, live music and an exhibitors’ area with booksellers and food trucks.

Festival highlights

  • Author sessions: conversations and readings with more than 250 writers, from debut novelists to bestselling headliners.
  • Ticketed sessions: intimate special programs available through Festival Friend Pass donations — book early, they sell out.
  • Lit Crawl: the festival’s after-hours celebration bringing literature into Austin’s venues with a playful twist.
  • Book signings: meet your favorite authors and take home a signed copy.
  • Family zone: story times and activities for young readers.

Founded by Laura Bush and a group of volunteers, the Texas Book Festival has connected readers and writers for decades while raising funds for Texas libraries. Two days, hundreds of authors, zero admission — Happy City News considers it one of the unmissable free events of the Austin fall season.

Beyond the headline authors, the festival grounds themselves are worth the trip: the pink granite Capitol framed by autumn skies, food trucks lining Congress Avenue, and families sprawled on the lawns with new books in hand. Hotels near downtown fill up fast for festival weekend, so visitors coming from out of town should book lodging early — and locals should plan for extra traffic around the Capitol on both days.
